Spring is the most important season for your lawn in Melbourne’s south-east. After the slow growth of winter, grass wakes up fast — especially in Pakenham, Officer, Cranbourne, Berwick, Narre Warren, Hampton Park and Keysborough. What you do (or don’t do) in spring directly determines how good your lawn looks all summer.
Here’s the complete local spring lawn care guide we use for our clients at Small Brother Lawn Mowing Service.

1. Spring Mowing Schedule & Height
Spring is when grass grows the fastest in South East Melbourne.
- Recommended frequency: Every 7–10 days (sometimes every 5–7 days in October)
- Mowing height: Lower gradually from winter height
- Buffalo → 40–50 mm
- Kikuyu → 35–45 mm
- Couch / TifTuf → 30–40 mm
Tip: Never cut more than one-third of the grass height in one mow.
2. Fertilising in Spring – The Most Important Feed of the Year
Spring is the best time to fertilise because the grass is actively growing and can use the nutrients efficiently.
- Best time: Mid to late September (after the first few warm days)
- Second application: Late October / early November
- Use a slow-release fertiliser high in nitrogen (e.g. Lawn Solutions Quick Green, Yates Buffalo PRO, or Osmocote Pro).
3. Weed Control in Spring
Spring is when weeds germinate aggressively. Treating them early prevents headaches in summer.
- Bindi & Clover: Apply selective weed killer in early to mid-spring
- Onion Weed: Best treated in spring while actively growing
- Winter Grass: Usually dies off naturally, but pre-emergent can help next season

4. Aeration & Top Dressing
Heavy clay soils in Narre Warren, Hallam, and older parts of Berwick become compacted over winter.
Best time for aeration: Late August to mid-October
Follow with a light top dressing of sandy loam to improve drainage and root growth.
5. Spring Lawn Revival Checklist (South East Melbourne)
- Rake up remaining winter leaves and debris
- Aerate compacted areas
- Apply first spring fertiliser
- Start regular mowing (every 7–10 days)
- Apply pre-emergent or early weed control
- Apply wetting agent if soil is hydrophobic
Frequently Asked Questions – Spring Lawn Care
When should I start mowing in spring?
Start when the grass begins growing actively — usually mid to late August in most south-east suburbs.
Is it too late to fertilise in October?
No. Late October is still excellent, especially for the second application.
Should I dethatch my lawn in spring?
Only if there is a thick layer of thatch. Light raking or verti-mowing is usually enough.
